HOME ON THE FARM- Who are we??For those of you new to Blue Moon Farm, let us introduce ourselves. There are just the two of us, Leo Keene and Jean Pitches Keene... spouses, friends and labor on the farm. Both are East Coast transplants...Leo from Maryland's Eastern Shore and Jean from New York's Hudson Valley. We share our lives and home with our buddies Irie Moon, the best Rottweiler around, and Moondancer, a Tortoise Shell Siamese we rescued in 2013. The newest member of the family is Minnie Moon, a rescue puppy from Bluegrass Bully Rescue in early March 2020. They all add their love and senses of humor to our days on the farm. More on them later! Blue Moon Farm sits on the high side of a bend in the Kentucky River, in Madison County, Kentucky (the south central part of the state). We are blessed with a small river bottom of wonderful soil, forests, pasture, hills, waterfalls, beautiful wildflowers and abundant wildlife. We never expected that our choice of life's work would ever make us wealthy in a monetary sense, but when we look out over the river valley from our perch here on top of the hill at twilight, we feel like the richest people in the world! OUR CROPS: We are known for growing some of the best garlic in Kentucky (and a lot of other places!), but we also grow varied amounts of other produce for our farmers’ markets. Some examples are spinach, squash, eggplant, peppers, herbs. We also sell potted herb sets for your home herb gardens. Each year will vary. Please see the order page. ABOUT OUR GARLIC: Our garlic season begins in the spring with Baby Green Garlic, and in late April/early May we have Garlic Scapes (the flower stems of hardneck garlics). We sell them fresh, and also make a delicious Garlic Scape Pesto for sale frozen, year ‘round. We make our own “Knock-Your-Socks-Off” Garlic Powder from a few varieties of our crop. In mid-summer we begin braiding garlic, and shipping fresh bulbs and braids mail order. We have a selection of Bulbs and Garlic Braids at the market each week, and can make custom braids or garlands special order. Varieties of garlic change some from year to year depending on availability. |
